The Secret of Fátima – Apparitions, Prophecies, and the “Miracle of the Sun”
In 1917, events took place in a small Portuguese town that forever changed religious history. Even today, millions of people travel to this place, as one of the most unusual and controversial events in the Christian world occurred there.
This story is connected to the town of Fátima.
The events of Fátima consist of three major parts:
- The apparitions of the Virgin Mary
- The three prophetic secrets of Fátima
- The “Miracle of the Sun,” witnessed by tens of thousands of people
All of this happened in a single year — 1917.
How It All Began
On May 13, 1917, three shepherd children were tending sheep in a field near Fátima.

These children were:
- Lúcia dos Santos
- Francisco Marto
- Jacinta Marto
They claimed that a bright light appeared in the sky and that the Virgin Mary revealed herself to them.
According to the children, Mary told them she would return on the same day each month. The apparitions continued from May to October.
During these encounters, the children said they received three important messages, later known as:
“The Three Secrets of Fátima.”
The First Secret

The first secret was a disturbing vision.
The children said they were shown a symbolic vision of hell — a place where sinful souls suffered.
They described fire, shadows, and souls crying out for help.
This vision had a profound impact, especially on Jacinta Marto, who devoted her life to prayer and repentance afterward.
According to the Church, this vision was a warning for people to change their lives and turn away from sin.
The Second Secret
The second secret was more focused on global events.
According to the children, the message warned that if humanity did not change, the world would face even more devastating wars.
Many later connected this prophecy to World War II.
The message also emphasized spiritual transformation and the importance of prayer.
The Third Secret

The third secret became the most controversial.
It was kept secret in the Vatican for decades and was only officially revealed in 2000.
It describes a symbolic vision of a bishop dressed in white — often associated with the Pope — walking through a ruined city and ultimately becoming a victim of violence.
Many researchers linked this vision to the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.
However, some believe that the full text of the third secret may not have been completely revealed.
The “Miracle of the Sun” – The Most Famous Event
The most shocking part of the Fátima events occurred on October 13, 1917.
Around 70,000 people gathered in Fátima that day after the children announced that a miracle would occur.
This event is now known as the “Miracle of the Sun.”
According to witnesses:
- The sun appeared to spin in the sky
- It changed colors — red, blue, and golden
- It seemed to descend toward the Earth
Many believed it was the end of the world.
After a few minutes, everything returned to normal.
The Strangest Detail

After the event, people noticed something unusual.
Despite heavy rain and muddy ground, many reported that their clothes were almost completely dry afterward.
This detail was described by numerous witnesses.
Importantly, not only believers reported the event.
Journalists were also present, and one wrote in a newspaper that he had indeed seen unusual movement in the sky.
The Portuguese press widely covered the event, and the story quickly spread across Europe.
Today, Fátima is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the world.
The city is home to a major religious complex:
Millions of people visit every year, especially on May 13 and October 13.
An Unresolved Mystery

The events of Fátima remain a subject of debate.
Was it:
- A divine miracle
- A rare natural phenomenon
- Or a mass psychological effect
There is no definitive answer.
But one fact is undeniable —
the events that took place in a small Portuguese town in 1917 created one of the greatest mysteries in religious history.
