They Changed the World—The 12 Apostles of Jesus

When Jesus Christ walked along the roads of Galilee, he was not surrounded by kings, generals, or great scholars. Beside him stood ordinary people — fishermen, a tax collector, craftsmen. People no one expected would ever change history.

Yet these very people became his 12 apostles.

It All Began by the Sea

Jesus meets fishermen who later became his disciples.

One morning, by the Sea of Galilee, two brothers were mending their nets. Peter and Andrew were simple fishermen. Their lives seemed predictable — daily labor and quiet poverty.

Then Jesus appeared.

He said to them: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Those words were enough. They left everything behind — their boats, their nets, their old lives — and followed him.

Soon others joined them — James and John, also fishermen. Then came Matthew, a tax collector despised by the people. And more followed — each with a different past, but now walking the same path.

Imperfect Men

The apostles were not born saints.

Peter was impulsive — one day ready to die for Jesus, the next denying him out of fear.
Thomas doubted — he could not believe the resurrection until he saw it with his own eyes.
Matthew was seen as a traitor — working for the Romans.
Simon was a revolutionary — a man not afraid of resistance.

They were different, they argued, they doubted… but they continued to follow.

The Turning Point — The Crucifixion

Everything changed the day Jesus was arrested.

Their leader, their hope — was crucified.

That night, the apostles scattered. Fear overtook them.

Judas — one of their own — had already betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Later, unable to bear the weight of what he had done, he ended his life.

It seemed like everything was over.

After the Resurrection — A New Beginning

But the story did not end there.

The apostles claimed that Jesus had risen from the dead.
And that belief changed them.

Those who once hid in fear now stood in the streets and spoke openly.

Peter, who once denied Jesus, now spoke to thousands.
Thomas, who doubted, traveled to distant lands.
John, the youngest, preached about love.

Paths That Spread Across the World

The apostles went in different directions.

Some preached in Asia Minor, others in Greece, and some traveled as far as India.

They had no power, no armies, no wealth.
They had only one thing — faith.

And with that faith, they changed people.

The Heavy Price

But this path was not easy.

Empires did not accept their message.
Persecution began.

Most of the apostles were killed brutally.

Peter was crucified in Rome — according to tradition, upside down.
Andrew was crucified.
Thomas was killed with spears.
James was executed by the sword.
Bartholomew was tortured to death.
Matthew, Philip, Simon — almost all met martyrdom.

Only John escaped a violent death and lived to old age.

An Ending That Was Truly a Beginning

From the outside, their story looks tragic — persecution, suffering, death.

But their influence did not end there.

What they started continued for centuries.

They had no power to change the world —
but they had faith, and that was enough.

Final Thought

The story of the 12 apostles reminds us of one thing:

Great changes do not always begin with great people.
Often, they begin with ordinary individuals who are willing to follow what they believe in.

And those are the ones who change the world.
